The World Health Organization (WHO) has evaluated cannabis and its components, including cannabidiol (CBD), in relation to their medical use. Relevant information follows:
- Cannabidiol (CBD):
- CBD is one of the many compounds present in Indian hemp. According to the WHO, in its pure form, cannabidiol does not appear to be harmful or pose a risk of abuse. Therefore, it is not classified as a substance subject to international control on its own.
- However, when CBD is produced for pharmaceutical purposes as an extract of cannabis, it is considered part of the controlled substances. Some countries have relaxed their regulations on cannabidiol, considering it a medical product.12.
- Therapeutic value:
- Although the WHO does not specifically recommend the medical use of cannabidiol, initial data from animal and human studies suggest that it may have therapeutic value in:
- Epileptic seizuresCBD has been observed to help calm spasms during epileptic seizures.
- Related diseasesIts use has also been studied in chronic diseases and nervous disorders.1.
- Although the WHO does not specifically recommend the medical use of cannabidiol, initial data from animal and human studies suggest that it may have therapeutic value in:
- Ongoing research:
- The WHO continues to evaluate cannabis and its components. In June 2018, the WHO expert committee met to examine in more detail extracts or preparations that contain almost exclusively cannabidiol.
- Although there are indications of its effectiveness, more data are needed to strongly support its medical use.13.

Cannabis contains several components, some of which have been studied in relation to cancer. The main ones are listed below:
- Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)This is one of the best-known components of cannabis. It is responsible for the psychoactive effects and has also been studied for its ability to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and act as an antioxidant.1.
- Cannabidiol (CBD)Another important component of cannabis. Unlike THC, CBD does not produce psychoactive effects. Its use has been investigated in the treatment of seizures, anxiety, and paranoia, and it may also counteract the effects of THC.1.
- Other cannabinoidsIn addition to THC and CBD, there are other cannabinoids in cannabis that are being studied. However, research on these compounds is less extensive compared to THC and CBD.1.
It is important to note that cannabis is not chemical-free. It contains a mixture of compounds and substances, including tar, ammonia, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, cyanide, and benzene. Some of these chemicals and compounds have been linked to various lung diseases, including cancer.23. Therefore, it is essential to consider these risks when evaluating cannabis use.
In summary, CBD may have therapeutic applications, but more research is needed to fully understand its medical benefits.
