Behavioral

Non-chemical behavioral addictions are:

Cell phones, the internet, TV, gaming, shopping, food, sex, work, exercise, driving at extreme speeds.

Behavioral addictions are repetitive behaviors that, at least in the initial stages, are pleasurable and generate psychological dependence and loss of control. The defining characteristic of the dependence process is not the behavior itself (for example, working), but rather the way the person relates to the behavior.

The common and central characteristic of all addictive behaviors is the loss of control or compulsion. A person with an addictive behavior has no control over that behavior, which will lead them to develop the other characteristic aspects of addiction.

Symptoms of behavioral addictions include:

  • Feeling of loss of control, tolerance (i.e., having to increase the frequency of the behavior to feel satisfied), hiding it from our family and friends.
  • Uncontrollable desire or need to engage in pleasurable behavior, progressive loss of control over the habit, leading to loss of control, neglect of daily activities in the personal, family, work or school area, in favor of practicing the addictive behavior

The risks associated with behavioral addictions can vary depending on the type of addiction.

However, in general, these addictions can have a negative impact on an individual's physical and mental health, as well as on their personal relationships and their performance at work or school.
